Who’s he then?
I’m Adrian. I used to do serious computing stuff, but now run an art and craft business. Funny old world, isn’t it?
But seriously folks…
My name is Adrian. I hold BSc and PhD degrees in Computing Science and, over the years, I have served time as a researcher and lecturer in a couple of UK Universities as well as working for all kinds of companies and organisations. The full list is too long and boring to include here, but it covers two computer system manufacturers (one specialist British company and one large multi-national), a hi-tech software house, a dot-com bubble start-up and a large IT services and consultancy outfit (amongst other things). Oh, I also spent a year or two as a freelancer, thus effectively working for myself for a while.
While tearing around between all these different employers, I’ve done all manner of jobs. Again, the full list is rather long and tedious, but the short and tedious version includes things like designing and developing bits of operating system for fault-tolerant computers; setting up and running engineering support teams; running software development teams; providing technical support for large and expensive computers; being a test engineer; being a technical author/editor and providing consultancy to various companies playing with various interesting bits of technology. I may have been the janitor, tea-boy, window-cleaner and chief cook and bottle-washer at some point along the way as well, but it’s been such a blur at times that I can’t really remember for sure.
At the beginning of 2006, I gave up on the hi-tech day job (having had quite enough of it for one lifetime) and joined my lovely wife Glenda in running our art and craft business. And I have been doing the artsy-craftsy thing full time ever since. I do still swear at computers on occasion, but that’s purely incidental now rather than being a career in its own right.
When not working, I spend my time reading books, playing with cameras (still and video), walking in the woods and being a musician. Do NOT get me started on the subject of keyboards, guitars, drums, recording equipment, studio software, digital audio workstations or, indeed, music in general. I can probably bore to Olympic standard on any of those topics.
This is my blog and, like many blogs, it is a random and haphazard collection of thoughts, opinions, interesting facts, not-so-interesting facts, miscellaneous fictions and sundry bits and pieces. A snapshot of my life and times, if you like. If you enjoy some (or all) of it then that’s great and you’re welcome. If you don’t enjoy any of it, then just follow the links in my blogroll and keep on following links until you find something that you prefer. Or Google for it.
Cheers!
